Dubai Metro: Pulling out all stops
Passengers during rush hour at Nakheel Harbour and Tower Station. The Roads and Transport Authority said a total of 30 million passengers have used Dubai Metro since first began operations. Dubai Metro is a driverless, fully automated Metro network built at a cost of Dh28 billion. The number of stations which are currently operational on the Red Line number 21, from a total of 29.

Dubai marked its transition into a two-airport city last month, with the much-awaited launch of cargo operations at Al Maktoum International. A diverse range of cargo carriers have registered to operate in the airport – which is part of the multi-billion dollar Dubai World Central development – including Aban Air, ACI, Aerospace Consortium, Aviation Service Management, Coyne Airways, EuroAsian Services, Rus Aviation, Sonic Jet, SunGlobal, Skyline and United Aviation Services.
Smartworld uses APC to power new datacentres
Service provider Smartworld has completed the installation of two Tier-3 rated datacentres in Dubai World Central with the help of power and cooling specialist APC by Schneider Electric. Smartworld is involved with a number of major upcoming technology projects in Dubai and specialises in the aviation sector, with a business unit devoted to airport systems.
UAE spends Dh31.6m on airport security
Dubai International is already poised for an aggressive expansion, as Griffiths said: “In the long term, we expect to crack the 100-million passenger mark before the end of the next decade so investment in the infrastructure to support this growth will continue. This includes plans for building Concourse 3 the world’s first dedicated A380 facility and Dubai World Central-Al Maktoum International.”

Does Dubai need another airport?
Dubai’s colossal new transport hub, Al Maktoum International Airport, is set to open in June – albeit for cargo flights only. No date has been set for the launch of passenger flights, but the airport’s management is in ongoing talks with airlines over relocation to the new hub.
